Description:

First Steps helps people newly diagnosed with a dementia and their care partner understand the diagnosis and the changes they experience. Individuals in the process of diagnosis may also attend.



This free learning series is offered over 4 weeks in-person. The groups are kept small and offered in a way that everyone learns.



First Steps will help you to understand the diagnosis and learn tips and strategies that will help you live well, day to day. You will also learn:
- the different types of dementia
- the resulting changes in the brain
- planning for the future
- strategies to remain independent for as long as possible



Participating in the First Steps Learning Series will introduce you to other individuals who are also living with dementia.

Eligibility Criteria
Criteria:
  • The care partner and the person living with dementia understand they will both be attending all sessions together.
  • The person living with dementia has a diagnosis of dementia or is in the process of being diagnosed.
  • The person living with dementia is aware of changes in cognition and function and has has the ability to understand and appreciate the impact these changes have on self and others.
  • The person living with dementia has the ability to articulate thoughts, feelings and concerns in a group setting.
  • The person living with dementia understands the purpose of the learning series and freely gives consent to participate.
