STEPPS stands for Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving. It was specifically designed as a program for people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. However, participants do not need to have a formal diagnosis in order to attend the group. It runs once weekly for approximately 15 weeks (2 hour session once weekly).
STEPPS could be helpful for those who frequently have trouble with
overwhelming emotions, or with the absence of emotions resulting in feelings of emptiness. Relationship problems, trouble trusting others, sudden changes in mood, and thoughts about self-harm are also areas that this group addresses.
STEPPS can help with awareness of the causes and triggers of emotions, and teaches five skills to help manage powerful emotions. It also focuses on other aspects of healthy lifestyles that promote better emotional regulation, such as building relationships and trust, replacing unhealthy behaviours, healthy nutrition and exercise, sleep hygiene, etc.
